BMW G30 Buyer Guide: 5 Series (2017-2023)

The G30 is the seventh-generation BMW 5 Series saloon, sold in the UK from 2017 to 2023. Premium-fleet and PCP volume executive saloon, ULEZ-compliant across the entire range from launch, with a deep engine line-up running from 518d diesel to F90 M5 V8 (separate chassis). LCI happened in 2020 with iDrive 8 and a refreshed exterior. Used market is now emerging fast as PCP returns build. This guide covers what to check, which engine to pick, and what to expect to spend in 2026.

Quick verdict

The G30 is the obvious 5 Series buy for ULEZ compliance without compromise. Post-LCI cars (mid-2020 onwards) get iDrive 8 (curved-glass twin display) and the refreshed front and rear styling. Most engines from 2020 are mild-hybrid 48V; the BSG and 48V battery are documented wear items on early builds. The 540i (B58) is one of the best modern executive saloons available used in the UK. Avoid the M550i unless you really want a V8.

What is the BMW G30?

Most G30s in UK classifieds in 2026 are 2018 to 2021 520d M Sport diesels, ex-PCP, 40,000 to 80,000 miles. The 540i (B58 inline-six) is the petrol enthusiast pick. The 530d xDrive (B57) is the family-distance pick. The 530e PHEV is the London commuter option if home charging is available. The M5 (F90) is a separate buying conversation: S63 V8 twin-turbo, Competition Pack, M5 CS variants.

Current-generation 5 Series. Premium-fleet and PCP volume. Used market emerging fast as PCP returns build. 520d M Sport is the modal car. M550i and M5 (F90) sit at the top end. Mild-hybrid 48V across most engines from 2020 LCI. ULEZ-compliant across the entire range from launch.

Pre-LCI vs LCI: what changed

BMW launched the G30 in February 2017 as the successor to the F10 5 Series. LCI happened in June 2020. Headline changes at LCI: iDrive 8 (curved-glass twin display) replaced iDrive 7, mild-hybrid 48V was rolled out across most engines, refreshed kidney grille and headlight design, and the 545e xDrive (B58 PHEV) was added. Cars registered after roughly August 2020 are LCI cars; verify by iDrive display style and front-end design.

Engines and which to choose

For most UK buyers, the 520d (B47) is the right G30: ULEZ-compliant, modal car, deepest used pool. The 530d xDrive (B57) is the family-distance pick. The 540i (B58) is the petrol enthusiast pick. The 530e PHEV is the London commuter option. Avoid the 518d (underpowered for the chassis) and the M550i V8 (rare, expensive long-tail from N63 V8 inheritance).

ULEZ status by year and engine

Every G30 engine is Euro 6d and ULEZ-compliant from launch, including all diesels. Pre-LCI 2017-2020 diesels are Euro 6d-TEMP; post-LCI are Euro 6d. CCZ exemption requires 530e or 545e PHEV with electric range qualifying.

Common G30-specific problems

Chassis-level failure modes only: body, electrics, infotainment, suspension, ancillaries. Engine-specific faults (timing chain, EGR, DPF) live on the engine guides linked above.

Failure modeSeverityFrequencyTypical onsetUK repair range
48V mild-hybrid starter-generator failure Moderate Uncommon 30 to 80k mi £800 to £1,800
iDrive 7 software bugs (pre-LCI 2017-2020) Mild Common 10 to 80k mi Free (recall) or up to £200
Rear air suspension bag failure (option / standard on xDrive) Moderate Common 70 to 130k mi £400 to £800
Electric water pump failure Moderate Common 70 to 130k mi £500 to £750
AdBlue / NOx sensor faults (B47 / B57 diesels) Moderate Common 40 to 100k mi £300 to £1,200
Integral Active Steering module fault Moderate Uncommon 60 to 130k mi £800 to £1,500

48V mild-hybrid starter-generator failure

What to do about it: No preventative measure. Often covered by BMW warranty if within 3 years / 36k miles. Outside warranty, BSG and 48V battery are integrated and replaced together.

If ignored: Stop-start disabled; fuel economy drops 1-2 mpg.

UK repair exposure: £800 to £1,800.

Recall / TSB: BMW software and hardware campaigns 2020-2022.

Additional notes: Mild-hybrid is on 2020+ G30. Pre-LCI 2017-2019 cars don't have it.

iDrive 7 software bugs (pre-LCI 2017-2020)

What to do about it: BMW Remote Software Upgrade (RSU) addresses many issues; verify latest update applied. Reflash at BMW dealer £0 to £200.

If ignored: Cosmetic; car still drives. Daily annoyance for some.

UK repair exposure: Up to £200 (free under recall if applicable).

Recall / TSB: Multiple BMW software updates 2018-2021.

Additional notes: LCI G30 (2020+) moved to iDrive 8 with curved-glass display; different bugs, less severe.

Rear air suspension bag failure (option / standard on xDrive)

What to do about it: Replace failed bag promptly. £400 to £800 per side. Replace both sides if past 100k miles.

If ignored: Compressor wear; eventual MOT failure.

UK repair exposure: £400 to £800.

Additional notes: Rear air suspension is option on G30 saloon, standard on G31 Touring. Verify on viewing.

Electric water pump failure

What to do about it: Replace pump and thermostat together at 100k miles. Around 2 hours specialist labour.

If ignored: Engine overheats, head gasket damage, £1,500+ repair.

UK repair exposure: £500 to £750.

Additional notes: G30 pumps slightly more durable than F10 era but failure mode same.

AdBlue / NOx sensor faults (B47 / B57 diesels)

What to do about it: NOx sensors are wear items at 60-80k. Replace at first warning. £300-£500 per sensor.

If ignored: Restricted-start countdown eventually blocks ignition.

UK repair exposure: £300 to £1,200.

Additional notes: Same pattern as F10 B47 / B57 diesels.

Integral Active Steering module fault

What to do about it: Module replacement is specialist work; £800 to £1,500 at indie.

If ignored: System falls back to conventional steering. MOT advisory if persistent.

UK repair exposure: £800 to £1,500.

Additional notes: Only on cars with Integral Active Steering option. Verify presence on viewing.

MOT advisory patterns

Typical MOT advisories aggregated across UK F30 records. Not all will be present on any given car, but at 80,000+ miles you should expect at least two from this list:

Pre-purchase checklist (G30-specific)

Add these G30-specific checks on top of our generic UK used-BMW inspection checklist:

Buy, negotiate, or walk away

Buy

Post-June-2020 LCI build with iDrive 8, M Sport trim, full BMW service history, all open campaigns completed, warranty status confirmed, no active 48V mild-hybrid warnings.

Negotiate

Pre-LCI car with iDrive 7 freezing (verify software updates done). 48V mild-hybrid warning history. AdBlue / NOx warnings on B47 / B57. Open BMW campaign work. Rear air suspension sagging.

Walk away

Multiple unaddressed 48V mild-hybrid faults outside warranty. Persistent iDrive 7 issues despite updates. M5 / M550i with evidence of track use or modification without documentation. Salvage or write-off on HPI.

Long-term ownership verdict

Too early to give a confident long-term verdict; most G30s are still under 9 years old. Based on the F10 generation and the modular B-series engine family, well-maintained G30s should comfortably reach 200,000-250,000 miles. Biggest watch items as the fleet ages: 48V mild-hybrid hardware on 2020+ cars, iDrive 7 longevity on pre-LCI cars, AdBlue / NOx wear on diesels. The 540i B58 is currently the standout for long-term value. Buy on the service file.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BMW G30 reliable?

Early signals are positive. Inherits the F10 chassis lessons (resolved water pump, rear bushes, FRM3 weakness all addressed in G30). Main G30-specific concerns are the 48V mild-hybrid hardware on 2020+ cars, iDrive 7 software bugs on pre-LCI, and AdBlue / NOx wear on B47 / B57 diesels. Phase 1: failure picture will sharpen over 2026-2028.

Pre-LCI vs LCI G30, which is better?

LCI (post-June 2020) is the better tech package: iDrive 8 with curved-glass display, BMW Operating System 8, mild-hybrid 48V, refreshed styling. iDrive 7 (pre-LCI) had documented freezing addressed in software updates. £4,000+ LCI premium worth it if budget allows.

Is the G30 520d ULEZ-compliant?

Yes, every G30 engine is Euro 6d-TEMP or Euro 6d from launch and ULEZ-compliant including diesels. This is the cleanest of the modern 5 Series generations.

How much should I pay for a 2020 G30 520d M Sport?

In 2026, expect £22,000 to £27,000 with 45,000 miles, full BMW service history. LCI examples command around £4,000 premium over equivalent 2019 pre-LCI cars. Options that add a meaningful used premium: M Sport Pro (Adaptive Drive + Harman Kardon + LED Pro headlights), Head-Up Display, Driving Assistant Professional, Integral Active Steering.

Which G30 engine should I buy?

520d (B47) for ULEZ-compliant diesel value. 530d xDrive (B57) for long-distance comfort. 540i (B58) for petrol enthusiast value. 530e PHEV for London commuters. Avoid the 518d (underpowered) and the M550i (V8 long-tail risk).

What about the M5 (F90)?

F90 M5 is a separate chassis: S63 V8 twin-turbo, 591 to 626 bhp depending on variant (M5, M5 Competition, M5 CS), all xDrive (with selectable RWD mode). Used 2026 prices: £55,000 to £130,000 depending on year, variant, and CS status. M5 CS is appreciating fast. Owner-known issues are minimal so far; oil-cooler thermostat and rear differential service are the main long-tail items.

What's the difference between G30 and G31?

Same generation, two body styles. G30 is the saloon, G31 is the Touring (estate). G31 has standard rear self-levelling air suspension; G30 has it as option. Engine line-up is the same. Touring is rarer in UK than saloon.

Should I buy a 530e PHEV?

Strong yes if you have home charging, do a short daily commute (under 30 miles), and need ULEZ + Congestion Charge friendliness. 12 kWh battery; around 35 mile real-world electric range. Without home charging, it's a heavier 520i petrol, not a smart buy.

How long will a G30 last?

Too early to give a confident answer; the early G30s are passing 100,000 miles now. Based on F10 generation and B-series engine family: well-maintained G30s should comfortably reach 200,000-250,000 miles. Biggest unknowns are 48V hardware and iDrive 7 longevity.

Is the 540i a good buy?

Yes, one of the standouts of modern BMW used. B58 inline-six (B58TU post-2018 has port + direct injection, reduced carbon-buildup), 340 bhp, ULEZ-compliant, M Sport Differential option, around £34,000 to £42,000 for a 2022 LCI in 2026. Strong long-term value.
