BMW G42 Buyer Guide: 2 Series (2021-present)

The G42 2 Series Coupe is BMW's second-generation 2 Series and the LAST entry-level RWD BMW Coupe currently in production. UK launch November 2021, replacing the F22. Unique among current BMW entry models: G42 kept the RWD platform (CLAR shared with 3 / 4 Series) when the 1 Series went FWD-only on F40. M240i xDrive is the AWD M Performance halo (B58 374 bhp, no manual). The separate G87 M2 (S58 twin-turbo M-engine) is the proper M car.

Quick verdict

The G42 2 Series Coupe is the cheapest current-gen RWD-platform BMW available in 2026. M240i xDrive is one of the fastest BMWs you can buy for under £45k. Manual gearbox is permanently gone (F22 M240i was the last manual 2-door RWD BMW Coupe). M240i xDrive is auto-only and AWD-only; this is the modal G42 enthusiast buy. 220i M Sport is the value entry. The G42 is meaningfully more refined than F22 but loses the optional manual gearbox cult appeal.

What is the BMW G42?

Most G42 2 Series Coupe cars in UK classifieds are 2022-2024 M240i xDrive M Sport examples plus a smaller pool of 220i M Sport cars. Ex-PCP volume building from 2024 onwards. The M240i is the halo: B58 374 bhp single-turbo I6, xDrive, 0-60 in 4.3 seconds, £35,000-£46,000 used. 220d M Sport (diesel coupe) is rare UK volume; most buyers in this segment choose petrol. The G42 is more refined than F22 and arguably better-looking; loses the manual gearbox option and the lighter pure-RWD M240i feel.

G42 2 Series Coupe launched UK November 2021, replacing the F22. Unique among current BMWs: retained RWD platform (CLAR architecture shared with 3 Series / 4 Series) when the 1 Series went FWD-only. G42 is the last RWD entry BMW coupe currently in production. M240i xDrive is auto-only (no manual), which makes the F22 M240i the last manual RWD 2-door BMW Coupe ever. G42 M240i is xDrive-only standard; G87 M2 is the separate full-M chassis.

M240i xDrive was the M Performance halo at launch; separate G87 M2 launched 2023. No LCI yet (production continues). Long-term ownership verdict

G42 long-term is still being written; most cars in 2026 are within warranty. Inherited concerns from the modular B-engine fleet: OEM plastic charge pipe on B58 (M240i), water pump at 80k+, xDrive transfer case fluid discipline. New concern: 48V BSG wear on MHEV variants (~£1,000-£2,200 out of warranty). M240i xDrive is one of the most reliable hot coupes BMW currently sells; the B58 single-turbo I6 is a Wards 10 Best engine 4 years running. Specialist running cost: roughly £600 to £1,000 per year on top of fuel and tax.

Frequently asked questions

Is the G42 2 Series Coupe reliable?

Early signals are very strong. Most G42 cars in 2026 are within warranty. B58 (M240i) and B48 (220i / 230i) are among BMW's most reliable modern petrol engines. Inherited B-engine concerns (charge pipe upgrade, water pump at 80k+) apply. xDrive transfer case fluid discipline. 48V MHEV BSG is the new long-tail concern. With service-history discipline, expect 200,000+ miles.

Why is there no manual G42 M240i?

BMW decided. M240i xDrive launched as auto-only (8-speed ZF). The decision was justified by sales mix on F22 M240i (manual was less than 25% of UK volume) and by the move to xDrive standard. The F22 M240i (2016-2021) was the last manual RWD 2-door BMW Coupe ever; that scarcity is driving F22 manual prices up while G42 manual buyers are stuck with no option.

Is the G42 2 Series Coupe ULEZ-compliant?

Yes, all G42 builds are Euro 6d from launch and ULEZ-compliant. No ULEZ concern.

G42 M240i xDrive or G87 M2?

M240i xDrive is M Performance: B58 production engine (374 bhp), AWD, 8-speed auto, 4.3-second 0-60, £35,000-£46,000 used. G87 M2 is full M car: S58 twin-turbo M-engine (453-473 bhp), RWD only, 6-speed manual or 8-speed M Steptronic, 3.9-second 0-60, £55,000-£75,000 used. M240i is the daily-driver hot coupe; G87 M2 is the focused performance car with proper M-engine character. M240i is around £20,000-£30,000 cheaper.

G42 M240i or F22 M240i?

G42 M240i xDrive: modern B58 374 bhp, AWD-only, no manual, 4.3-second 0-60, £35,000-£46,000. F22 M240i: B58 340 bhp, RWD-only, manual or auto, 4.6-second 0-60, £20,000-£32,000. G42 is faster and more modern; F22 manual is the appreciating cult buy. Pick G42 if you want the modern performance and don't need manual; pick F22 if you want manual / RWD purity at lower money.

Is the G42 2 Series Coupe expensive to run?

Moderate. BMW dealer servicing: £400 to £550 for an inter-mediate service. Independent specialists: £300 to £420. Plus engine-specific items (£150 to £350 charge pipe on M240i) and tyres (around £600 to £900 per pair on M240i run-flats). Realistic annual running cost: £700 to £1,100 plus fuel and tax. M240i is higher; 220i is at the lower end.

G42 vs G87 M2?

G42 is the regular 2 Series Coupe chassis (220i / 220d / M240i xDrive). G87 M2 is the SEPARATE M car chassis (S58 twin-turbo M-engine, M-spec body, M-spec chassis). Different cars on a shared CLAR platform but with bespoke M components on the M2. G42 M240i is the M Performance variant of the regular 2 Series; G87 M2 is the full M car. Pick the M2 if you want the proper M experience.

G42 vs F22 2 Series Coupe?

Same body class (RWD-platform 2-door Coupe). G42 is the modern successor (2021+); F22 is the predecessor (2014-2021). G42 has 48V MHEV, iDrive 7, more refinement, no manual option. F22 has the manual option (cult appeal), simpler infotainment, and meaningfully cheaper used prices. Pick G42 for modern; pick F22 for character and the last manual.

Does the G42 have a Convertible variant?

No. The G42 2 Series Coupe is COUPE-ONLY. The F23 Convertible (F22 era) was discontinued and there's no current G42-era equivalent. If you want a current BMW Convertible, the options are 4 Series Convertible (G23) or M4 Convertible (G83); both are larger cars.

Should I wait for the G42 LCI?

Depends on timing. G42 LCI expected 2025-2026 with iDrive 8.5 and revised front-end styling. If you can wait 12-18 months, the LCI will be cleaner spec. If you're buying now, the current pre-LCI G42 is mature spec; M240i xDrive cars at 30,000 miles in 2026 are well-tested used buys.
