BMW F32 Buyer Guide: 4 Series (2013-2020)

The F32 is the first-generation BMW 4 Series Coupe, sold in the UK from 2013 to 2020. BMW separated the 3 Series Coupe out into its own 4 Series identity for this generation, giving it widened arches, lowered stance, and its own model name. Mechanically twin to the F30 saloon: same engines, same trims, same chassis-level wear patterns. Coupe-specific items: rear (small) window regulators, wastegate rattle on 435i and 440i. This guide tells you what to check and which engine to pick.

Quick verdict

The F32 is the modern executive-coupe value buy. Post-LCI cars (mid-2017 onwards) get the better B47, B48 and B58 engines, ULEZ-compliant diesels, and Apple CarPlay retrofittable. The 440i (B58) is the M Performance pick and an honest fast UK car at £22,000 to £34,000 in 2026. The 430d xDrive (B57) is the long-distance pick. M4 is a separate chassis with its own conversation. Same F30 buying logic applies, with around £200 to £500 coupe premium over an equivalent F30.

What is the BMW F32?

Most F32s in UK classifieds are 2017 to 2019 LCI 420d M Sport and 440i M Sport Coupes. The 420d is the everyday buyer; the 440i is the enthusiast pick. The 435d xDrive (LCI B57) is the rare-but-rewarding long-distance pick. M4 (F82) is a separate buying conversation: S55 twin-turbo, rod-bearing service, charge pipe upgrade standard.

BMW's first 4 Series, splitting the 3 Series Coupe off into its own brand identity in 2013. Mechanically twin to the F30 saloon, visually distinct with widened arches and lowered stance. M Performance pick is the 440i (B58 LCI). M4 (F82) is a separate chassis with its own conversation.

Pre-LCI vs LCI: what changed

BMW launched the F32 in October 2013 as the successor to the E92 3 Series Coupe (renamed as 4 Series). LCI happened in July 2017, tracking the F30 saloon's LCI from 2015 with a two-year delay. Engine transitions matched F30: N47 to B47 for 420d, N20 to B48 for 420i / 430i, N55 to B58 for 435i to 440i, plus the introduction of Apple CarPlay. Cars first registered after roughly August 2017 are the LCI cars.

Engines and which to choose

440i (B58, LCI) for performance value. 430i (B48) for petrol balance. 420d (B47, LCI) for cost-of-running. 430d xDrive (B57) for long-distance comfort. Avoid pre-LCI N47 / N57 diesels without timing-chain history.

Pre-purchase checklist (F32-specific)

Add these F32-specific checks on top of our generic UK used-BMW inspection checklist:

Buy, negotiate, or walk away

Buy

Post-July-2017 LCI build (B47 / B48 / B58 / B57), M Sport or M Sport Shadow Edition trim, full BMW service history, electric water pump and rear bushes done within recent history, FRM3 healthy, EGR recall completed on diesels, no significant wastegate rattle.

Negotiate

Pre-LCI N47 / N57 diesel without chain receipts. Loud wastegate rattle on 435i / 440i (£200 to £800). Outstanding rear window regulator. EGR recall outstanding. Boot button corrosion.

Walk away

Cold-start chain rattle on N47 / N57. M4 (F82) with no rod-bearing or charge-pipe service. Modified 440i without documentation. Salvage or write-off on HPI.

Long-term ownership verdict

Properly maintained, an F32 will run to 200,000+ miles regardless of engine. The chassis is well-resolved and shares its platform with the F30 saloon. Coupe-specific failure modes are cheap to address. The 440i (B58) is currently one of the best value modern BMW coupes available used. Buy on the service file.

Related chassis

The F32 shares its platform with related body styles and performance variants. Each is a different car with different fault patterns and a different used market.

Frequently asked questions

Is the BMW F32 reliable?

Yes, the same as F30 saloon. F32-specific concerns are rear (small) window regulators and wastegate rattle on 435i / 440i. Otherwise: identical buying logic to F30.

What's the difference between F32 and F82?

F32 is the standard 4 Series Coupe (418d to 440i). F82 is the M4 Coupe (M4, M4 Competition, M4 CS, M4 GTS), which has its own chassis code with S55 twin-turbo six (instead of F32's N55 / B58), wider arches, M-specific suspension and differentials. F82 M4 is a separate ownership conversation.

Is the F32 420d ULEZ-compliant?

Depends on build date. Pre-LCI N47 is Euro 5 (not compliant). Post-LCI B47 is Euro 6 (compliant). Verify on V5.

How much should I pay for a 2018 F32 440i M Sport?

In 2026, expect £22,000 to £28,000 with 45,000 miles, full BMW service history. The 440i holds value because of the B58 engine reputation. Manual transmission examples command around £1,500 to £2,500 premium over auto.

What's the difference between F32, F33 and F36?

Same generation, three body styles. F32 is the Coupe (2-door), F33 is the Convertible (folding hardtop), F36 is the Gran Coupe (4-door fastback). They share engines and trims; F33 has the additional folding-roof failure modes.

Should I buy a 435i or a 440i?

Same answer as F22 M235i vs M240i: 440i (B58 LCI) for everyday value, 435i (N55 pre-LCI) for slightly more raw character at lower money. The 440i is the safer used buy due to B58 reliability story.

What about the F82 M4?

S55 twin-turbo, 425 to 460 bhp depending on variant (M4, Competition, CS, GTS). Owner-known concerns: valve cover gasket leaks, charge pipe upgrades, rod bearings on tracked cars. Used prices in 2026: £32,000 to £80,000 depending on variant. M4 CS and GTS examples are appreciating.

How long will an F32 last?

200,000+ miles is realistic with documented servicing. No structural concerns; coupe-specific items are cheap.

Is the F32 worth more than an F30 saloon?

Slight coupe premium (£200 to £500 over equivalent saloon) plus a slightly more aggressive visual identity. Same engines and chassis. Choose based on body-style preference; mechanical decisions are identical.
